HOW TO: Suppress Snapshot Task Crash (4300984)

If you are getting dialog of Snapshot Task Crash (doesn’t matter in what language it is)

HOW TO Suppress Snapshot Task Crash – So you will never get that dialog anymore

2 options how to prevent:

·        1) Agent Setting in PST Flight Deck Console UI, or

·        2) Manually change the registry

1)Agent Setting in PST Flight Deck Console UI

Add new parameter <SuppressWer>true</SuppressWer> in agent config.

NOTE: Refer to full KB guideline attached on bottom

Based on this config Migration Agent (running on client computer) will set the registry to DontShowUI=1

In Path: Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting

2)Manually change the registry

In Path: Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting

Set to DontShowUI=1

PST Flight Deck – Snapshot Windows Error Reporting Registry Setting

Certain software programs can hold the Windows Snap Shot Service open in some environments and prevent it from closing. When PST FlightDeck attempts to exit certain tasks, the SnapShot service does not close properly. There are no negative impacts as a result of this. However, a Windows Application Crash Warning is displayed. These are typically environmental issues with certain security products. It usually is best to suppress this error message.

Customers that experience this error, when the below registry key setting to on, will see a popup:

Title: Snapshot

Text: Snapshot task has stopped working. Windows can check online for a solution.

Or:

Title: Snapshot.exe

Text: Snapshot.exe has stopped working. Windows can check online for a solution.

Most Windows Builds default this registry setting to suppress these errors. However, some locales & organizations default to different settings.

PST Flight Deck can be configured after version 9.1.1 to set a registry key to suppress these messages. If the customer is setting this registry key in group policy, the setting will revert when group policy applies to the device next. (usually 20 minutes)

This registry key is at the following location. For testing purposes, you can change this key manually.

Path:  HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting

DontShowUI  (DWORD Value)

If the value is 1, Error messages will be suppressed

If the key is not present or set to 0 – Error Messages will be displayed

To configure PST Flight Deck to change this key:

You must be running version 9.1.1 or latter

1.      In the PST Flight Deck Console, go to Windows Agent Settings

2.      Click Edit XML

3.      At the end of the configuration, Add new parameter <SuppressWer>true</SuppressWer>

Based on this config Migration Agent (running on client computer) will set the registry to DontShowUI=1
