If a Microsoft Teams channel was renamed before June 2022 and later migrated using On Demand Migration (ODM), the files for that channel may not appear under the renamed channel in the target tenant.
Behavior
The channel rename is reflected in Teams.
However, the underlying SharePoint folder on the source tenant was not renamed (this was expected behavior prior to June 2022).
During migration, ODM migrates files based on the original SharePoint folder name.
As a result, in the target tenant:
The renamed channel exists but contains no files.
The files are migrated to the original channel name, which is also created as a channel in the target team.
Example
Source Tenant
Team Name: Support
Original Channel Name: Test
SharePoint Folder: Test
Channel Renamed To: Test1
SharePoint Folder After Rename: Test (unchanged)
Target Tenant After ODM Migration
Team Name: Support
Channel: Test
SharePoint Folder: Test
Content: Migrated files
Channel: Test1
SharePoint Folder: Test1
Content: Empty
Root Cause
Before June 2022, renaming a Teams channel did not rename the associated SharePoint folder. ODM migrates content based on the SharePoint folder name, which causes files to be placed under the original channel name in the target tenant.
Outcome
The migrated content for the renamed source channel will be located under the original channel name in the target tenant.
There is no method within ODM to map a folder within the SharePoint document library to another location such as a new channel name folder.
