ODMT - Can ODM migrate Teams Chats as 'already read' in the target?
Description
After migration, all Teams chat messages show as unread in the target tenant.
Question: Is it possible for ODM to migrate Teams chats as 'already read'?
Cause
This behavior occurs because of how ODM migrates Teams chat data:
ODM does not copy original message objects with their metadata. Instead, it re-posts messages in the target tenant using a temporary Migration Service account.
Migrated messages appear as new posts because they are created by the service account, not the original sender.
Original authorship and timestamp are preserved only as text (e.g., "Originally posted by..."), not as metadata.
Private one-to-one chats are converted into group chats in the target, reinforcing that these are new entries rather than original objects.
Resolution
Currently, ODM cannot migrate Teams chats as 'already read' in the target tenant. This is a platform limitation due to:
The posting mechanism used during migration.
Lack of access to Teams message metadata flags (such as read/unread status) in the source environment.
