OS Version: Windows 2000, 2003
Application version: N/A
Description: This solution describes the most common reasons for this, explains possible workarounds and provides a link to a MS Knowledgebase article on this
Symptoms: When running a file system backup on a Windows client, the backup fails with "Child Process died unexpectedly". Also, you might see nvfs.exe crashing on the client.
This behaviour is down to the file system plugin trying to parse the "FilesNotToBackup" registry key and has been investigated in fault FSG-370. In certain conditions, this registry is incorrectly terminated, not using a double NULL character. In order to resolve this, you need to terminate the string correctly. There is a Microsoft Knowledgbase article on this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927389/en-us
The system will require a re-boot after implementing this change.
Future versions of the file system plugin will work around this Windows fault and ignore the incorrect termination so that they can proceed nevertheless.
