By default, NetVault will only scan for devices (drives and arm changers) on LUN 0 and 1
With SCSI, this is not normally a problem, as it would be unusual to have more than 2 LUNs (the only exceptions being some loaders which can have the drive on 1 LUN and the changer on another LUN, i.e. a multi-LUN device).
However, on a SAN, it is normal to have far more LUNs (sometimes hundreds).
If a customer sets up a fibre-attached tape drive on LUN 1 and the arm changer on LUN 2, then the net effect is that NetVault will only see the tape drive. However the operating system will see both arm changer and drive.
The reason NetVault limits the number of LUNs it scans by default is to minimise the amount of time it takes NetVault to scan for new devices at the start of day. If we were to scan even 20 or 30 LUNs, Netvault would take minutes, even hours, to startup.
To increase the number of LUNs scanned, please do the following:
1.Create a file called devmgr.cfg in the Netvault config directory...
2.And then add the following text....
[Configuration:Bus Count]
Value= n
[Configuration:Sid Count]
Value=n
[Configuration:Lun Count]
Value=n
N.B.The default settings for the above - if the devmgr.cfg file does not exist - are as follows:
Bus count = 8
SID count = 16
LUN count = 2
For the above, NetVault counts from 0, so if we say we count 8 SCSI ID's, we mean from 0 to 7, NOT 1 to 8.
So, the example below shows a configuration that will increase the LUN count from 2 to 7...
[Configuration:Bus Count]
Value=8
[Configuration:Sid Count]
Value=16
[Configuration:Lun Count]
Value=7
If increasing the LUN count it is advisable to stop NetVault from scanning for devices at start of day by doing the following:
3.Launch the NetVault Configurator.
4.On the "Device Scan" tab, change the setting "Scan for devices at start of day" from "Both" to "Neither"
This will stop NetVault from scanning for devices at start of day. The only other effect this will have is that if you add a new device, you will have to manually add it to NetVault rather than getting the pop-up "NetVault has detected a new device, do you want to add it" dialog.
