Full and Incremental Backup jobs have been created, but they are not associated with a "Backup Selection Set", so both jobs back up all of the data every time. Older versions of Netvault would have this outcome. Our latest Netvault 8.6 versions give you a pop up stating that you can not create an Incremental without loading a Selection Set from the Full backup.
Having the same "Backup Selection Set" name associated with the Full and Incremental job is what links them together in order for the Incremental job to backup only new or changed data. When this is not the case, the Incremental job also runs as if it were a Full backup.
For more information on this topic, please see the Administration Module 2-Basic Operation of NetVault Backup-Web-based Training
Following the steps below should help set up the "Backup Selection Set" on the Full job, which can then be associated with the Incremental job to only backup the data that's changed:
1.) Right-click on the Full backup in Job Management and choose "Edit / View Job"
2.) Check the "Modify" box on the lower-left corner of the job's "Selections" tab.
3.) The previous choices for which volumes/folders/files should still be intact (but can be verified by drilling down into the plugin to the folder/file level), so simply click the "Save As" button, then type in the desired "Backup Selection Set" name to be associated with both the Full and Incremental jobs.
4.) Click "OK" and the "Backup Selection Set" field in the lower-left corner of the Full job should now contain the "Backup Selection Set" name that was previously typed.
5.) Right-click on the Incremental backup in Job Management and choose "Edit / View Job".
6.) Check the "Modify" box on the lower-left corner of the job's "Selections" tab.
7.) Click the "Load" button in the lower-middle of the backup window, then highlight the "Backup Selection Set" name that was previously associated with the Full backup job.
8.) Click "OK" and the "Backup Selection Set" field in the lower-left corner of the Incremental job should now contain the "Backup Selection Set" name that was just selected.
9.) Run a Full backup job, then once it has successfully completed, the Incremental job should run and only backup data that has changed since the Full backup (or a previous successful Incremental) was last run.
In addition to Backup Selections Sets an Incorrect Backup Option Set within a job will cause issues. Example; A set created upon a Linux or Unix job and loaded into a Windows backup job would result in Fulls. (This also applies to a Windows Backup Options set loaded into a Linux or Unix backup. Reason for this is each specific OS has a specific Backup Options Set for them and when they are interchanged they are not recognized by the job.
