How to get tape diagnostic messages from an NDMP attached drive on a filer (4046752)

Reference procedure for enabling tape device debug on a NetApp filer.

1. Telnet/SSH onto the NetApp filer - 
   
   # telnet <FILER_NAME>
   
   
2. Enable ndmp debug logging option
   
   > options backup.log.enable debug
   
   
3. Start the ndmpd debug logging
   
   > ndmpd debug 70
   ndmpd debug verbose: 70
   ndmpd debug stack trace: false
   ndmpd debug screen trace: true
   ndmpd debug file trace: true
   
   
4. Enable the tape drive diagnostics gathering using `mt -t <TAPE_NAME> diag 1`. For example
   
   > mt -t rst0a diag 1
   Tue May 16 15:09:57 EDT [ver1corpnas01: tape_admin:info]: Tape driver diagnostic messages enabled
   
   
5. Perform the operation that is generating the media/drive failure
   
   
6. Disable the ndmp debug
   
   > ndmpd debug 00
   
   The NDMP debug log files are stored in /vol/vol0/etc/logs on the filer, with the naming convention of /etc/logs/ndmpxxx.log.
   The drive diagnostics will be put in the /vol/vol0/etc/messages file
   
   
7. Disable tape diags
   
   > mt -t rst0a diag 0
   
   
8. The tape drive diagnostic messages will be output in the messages file.
