This is due to a Microsoft decision to remove the ESE API from Windows 2008 making ESE restores from backup solutions that still support this backup method impossible.
Starting with Windows 2008 and Exchange 2010, the Microsoft preferred backup method is VSS and support for ESE has been removed.
Our internal tracking Bug is 21344.
Workaround1:
To restore the ESE backups to Exchange 2007 CCR, use the "Copy files to target directory" method then use Recovery Manager for Exchange to restore the needed mail boxes.
Workaround 2:
To avoid this Microdoft limitation for future backup/restores, change backup method to use VSS as the VSS API is fully supported by Windows 2008 and Exchange 2007 and above.
