Vcenter server and ESX servers are running version 5 VM system being restored created under Vsphere 5 .
Restore used the option to “alternative target ESX server”
Binary log shows following failure:

Restore of VM systems created using Vshpere 4
When an ESXi 5.0 host is managed by a vCenter Server, virtual machines should not be restored when connected directly to the ESXi host. This restriction is due to a new feature introduced in vSphere 5
Do not restore to alternative target ESX server if the ESX server is within the ESX cluster controlled by Vshpere 5 server
