DB2 backups failures causes DB2 database to crash
Description

Netvault DB2 plugin backups failures are causing the DB2 database to crash.

Any DB2 plugin backup failure may cause DB2 database to either crash or shutdown.
An example of this would be if the backup runs with media timeout set and the media timeout is exceeded, the backup will be failed as part of the action for exceeding the media timeout. This then cause the DB2 database on the backup client to crash or shutdown.
- Second job will end with an error "Media request has expired"
- The process db2syscs.exe crashes on the client at the same time backup fails.
The crash indicates that its caused by: libnv6.dll - Quest NetVault Backup Core library.
Cause

Windows OS: aborting DB2 Job waiting for first piece of media can result in NVBU library to exit abruptly and DB2 instance to fault and shutdown
If a DB2 Job is waiting, in particular for the first piece of media, but the jobs gets aborted, then it can result in a fault, that might bring the DB2 instance down.
In Windows, a threaded model is implemented in DB2. In Windows, there is a single process db2syscs.exe, and the engine dispatchable units are threads, The NetVault DB2 plug-in library also runs as a thread under db2syscs.exe
If a thread exits abruptly, or a fault in one thread, this can can cause the DB2 process to fault, and bring the DB2 instance down.
Resolution

Workaround for media timeouts causing DB2 crash or shutdown.
Select under | Manage Job Definitions | Backup Target | Media Options | set Media Request Timeout to "0"
Check under Configuration | Change Settings | Server Settings | Media Manager | Data transfer stall time out (in seconds) this should be 1800.
Resolution:
Bug DNPDB2-228 has been raised for this of Netvault backup failures causing DB2 to shut down on the client.
This will be addressed in future version of the DB2 plugin.
This can be monitored by checking release note of the new DB2 plugin versions when released.
