Consolidations to the same DR appliances involves re-hydrating the data to be read from the machine where the Consolidate Incremental Backup Plugin is run, then restored back to the same appliance.
In such scenario, it has been observed that the DR storage (RAID 6) is maxing out on read operations creating a bottleneck for our consolidation process.
For consolidation of data hosted on DR the following is recommended:
- To have a 10 GbE network throughout between the NetVault machine hosting the Consolidate Incremental Backup Plugin and the DR
- Ideally do not consolidate to same DR over again but select another DR on the same 10 GbE network to avoid having to re-write the same data we just re-hydrated, back to the same storage already busy with the intensive read operation
- If having DR Series or QoreStor pairs is not an option, look into targeting a tape library directly attached to the NetVault machine running the consolidation
- Alternatively, if the only device available is a DR, then performing full backups instead of consolidating to the same device is recommended.
