Large Domino backups are failing with error "Job manager lost message channel unexpectedly”

Large Domino backups are failing with error "Job manager lost message channel unexpectedly” but smaller backups are successful. The Domino plug-in is exiting before the Job Manager expects it to. As such the Job Manager is marking the overall job as failed even though an index and saveset are successfully created.

There is a socket between the Domino master plug-in in the NVBU Client, and the Job Manager in the NVBU Server. This socket is used by the Domino master plug-in to send the exit status.  The socket is being closed on the server side by the user’s network because the socket is inactive for the duration of the backup. Hence the exit status message would never arrive at the NVBU Server because the other side of the socket is already closed.

WORKAROUND

A patch for the plug-in has been provided which would exercise the channel, by sending messages at a periodic interval. In this way the socket would be active, and the network would not close the socket. In addition, the plug-in would generate a job-mgr-change-state that also triggers the job manager to send MSG_FLUSH_CHANNEL_MSG at regular interval. The channel exercise message is send by the plug-in by default every 180 seconds. This can be configured in the plug-in options to a different value.
