VMware has identified a fault in their tracking of changed blocks if the virtual disk (vmdk) has been extended in size by 128 GB or more. This includes a single extension or multiple extensions that add-up to 128 GB or more.
The VMware CBT function QueryChangedDiskAreas command returns incorrect sectors after extending virtual machine vmdk file. A fix is expected in a future ESXi patch.
Workaround
After extending a VMDK beyond 128 GB you must reset Changed Block Tracking (CBT). This can easily be done using NetVault’s VMware plugin version 2.7 or higher by selecting the right-click option on the browse screen and choose ‘Reset CBT’ at the VM level. On versions prior to 2.7 please use the manual process documented at SOL87631
