A FibreCAT tape library LTO-3 drive was displaying a 400GB uncompressed tape as FULL with only 304.22GB stored on it.
As we could see from the VTL and Tape Library Compatibility Guide that the minimum Firmware version for the FibreCAT tape library was C113, and the tape library Firmware version of C284 that it had was above the minimum supported version.
And the minimum Firmware version for the HP LTO-3 HH drive was D21D, so the drive Firmware version of D237 is above the minimum supported version as well, so OK here too.
The tapes were also blanked to make sure that there was no data stored on the tapes, but this had no effect.
The information about a tape space is supplied from the drive with the tape library. So if there is a problem displaying the correct media space, then there could be an issue with the tape library/drive and/or library/drive Firmware. So I would advise to upgrade the library and drive Firmware to the latest versions.
In this case this didn’t help and the drive had to be replaced.
NOTE: Please make sure that the tape library is removed and re-added in NetVault Device Management again, so as to use the new SCSI Protocol Communication Channel. Otherwise further media/device issues will occur.
Then edit your current jobs to make sure that the new channel is used under the Target tab and save the Taget Set and job (The new channel will have the tape library name in black text and the old channel in grey text).
