Creating large VTLs on Linux can be very slow, even on a powerful server.
VTL creation on Linux will always take a very long time as it creates the library block by block. It is much slower than Windows. It is because VTL creation on Windows uses ‘Sparse Files’ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sparse_file).
Unfortunately there is no workaround for slow VTL creation on Linux (or other Solaris/MacOS systems). The alternative is to use SmartDisk. SmartDisk is replacement for VTL, so no further development work or enhancement/improvement will be considered for VTL.
