NDMP data backup taking longer and more space than expected
Description

The amount of data shown to be backed up for an NDMP backup request is larger than the amount of space being used on the NDMP source. Why is that?
Cause

This is a direct result of running the ONTAP deduplication routine on the volume. Netapp states this is "expected behavior". And according to the status command of running the

"This is an expected behavior. Deduplication is a volume-level activity,
and is not able to be replicated on a tape device."
Resolution

NDMP rehydrates the data. So the volume has 500GB of data that deduplicates to 250GB, it takes 250GB on disk but hydrates to 500GB on tape. There is no dedup to tape from the FAS controller.
