RMAN control files stores the metadata of the backups, achived redologs and its own activities, a control file autobackup lets you restore the RMAN repository contained in the control file when the control file is lost and you have no recovery catalog. Hence it is very important to backup the control file.
Note:An Autobackup of the Control File also includes the SPFILE. The Autobackups are made after every RMAN-based backup or after making structural changes to the database. Structural changes include adding a tablespace, altering the state of a tablespace or datafile, adding an online redo log, renaming a file, adding a redo thread, and so on.
In Netvault you can backup the control file to a separate storage location independent of the data files storage location ,however if the control file target is not not set in the plugin option it will fail with error:Cannot validate the selected NetVault Target Set: RMAN controlled backup,so it is important to configure the oracle plugin in a proper way.
In order to fix this error
Go to plugin settings, right-click, configure and select the option
:▪ CLI Backup/Autobackup Target Set (required for RMAN Backups): Specify the name of the Target Set that was created in Configuring a default Target Set for RMAN backups
