Symptoms:
The SmartDisk installer does not offer the option of placing indexes in a location other than the Storage area. Using the steps in this workaround it is possible to locate the indexes on another disk.
Normally it is only the Chunk Index that impacts performance, so this example will show how this can be placed elsewhere. Note: This procedure is only applicable for placing indexes BEFORE any data is written to SmartDisk.
1. Install SmartDisk and when prompted for stage and store directories, place these where they are required. The Disk Index and Chunk Index will by default go to the Storage volume.
2. Use the "smartdisk --add --volume" command to create a second volume that is favoured for Chunk Index and denied for Staging, Storage and Disk Index.
3. Use a "smartdisk --update --volume" command on the Storage volume to stop it's use for the Chunk Index. The options would normally be...
--deny "Chunk Index" --deny Staging --favor Storage --favour "Disk Index"
...but check that these are correct for your usage.
Now you can add SmartDisk to NetVault and start using it.
Once the indexes have been used the first time (by having data written to SmartDisk), the volume that they reside on should not have their deny and favour settings changed for indexes. This procedure works on installation because the indexes are not created by the installer but are built when they are first used.
