Answer
Yes, a mailbox enabled service account is required to gather the required mailbox statistics via PowerShell. Exchange Pro requires a mailbox enabled user with administrative privileges for both on-premises and Office 365 mailbox move migrations. This only pertains to Exchange 2010 and above.
Additional Information
For older versions of Exchange, Exchange Pro gathers mailbox statistics using:
- WMI for Exchange 2003 and requires WMI access to the Exchange servers.
- EWS for Exchange 2007 and requires impersonation rights have been granted to each mailbox.
- The only time MAPI access is needed is to sync public folders.
- WMI for Exchange 2003 and requires WMI access to the Exchange servers.
