First, try to load ADSIEDIT.MSC from Start | Run, if that does not load then the admin tools may not be installed (Downloadable from Microsoft)
Alternatively, load the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) through Start | Run | mmc (May require the installation of the adminpak.msi tools first)
Select File | Add/Remove Snapin, then click "Add" and select "ADSI Edit" from the list.
Click "Close" and then "OK"
In the Main MMC window Right Click "ADSI Edit" and then select "Connect To"
Check the Radio Box for "Select a well known Naming Context:" and in the drop down select "Domain". Click "OK"
After loading the Adsiedit snapin successfully.
In the MMC main window drop down "Domain" and browse to the User account which has issues, Right Click and select Properties.
Scroll down the list of attributes for the user and locate "Proxy Addresses", Highlight and click Edit.
In this window, check for multiple SMTP addresses first and remove any that are unwanted.
Now, make sure that the user is not mailenabled through the Exchange Management Console(2007) or Exchange System Manager(2003) and re-try the merge process again.
