Unable to install exchange agent. "Installation success or error status: 1603" -
Description
Attempting to install MailUnifiedSync agent (MAgE) on a remote server an error occurs reporting "Installation success or error status: 1603" and the agent fails to install. -
Cause
Error 1603 is returned when there is a missing software prerequisite detected by the MAgE installer. The details of which missing prerequisite can be found in the installer log located in C:\Windows\Temp\Quest.

Resolution
Here is an example from the installer log, in this case the required version of MAPI/CDO and Windows PowerShell were missing:
The following requirements are not met:
- Version 08.03.0.8353.000 or later of Microsoft Exchange Server MAPI Client and Collaboration Data Objects 1.2.1
- Windows PowerShell 2.0Another common missing prerequisite is .NET 3.5 SP1.
To resolve the issue, install the missing prerequisite on the MAgE host, restart and attempt the installation of MAgE.
