When trying to move a computer to the target domain, the following error can be found in the log file:
"\\Computer_Name MoveComputer 5 Error Access is denied. Cannot open the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\ComputerName\ActiveComputerName. (Computer_Name, RegOpenKeyEx)."
The Option "Set Credentials" is used and set with an account that has administrative rights over that computer.
This issue occurs if the Resource Updating Manager Service account does not have sufficient administrative rights over the computer. The option "Set Credentials" can be used to set credentials of an account which has administrative rights.
There are 2 ways to resolve this issue:
1. Add the Resource Updating Manager Service account to the Local Administrators group of the computer being moved. The Resource Updating Manager Service account can be located under Tools | Options | Service Account.
2. Use the "Set Credentials" option to set the required credentials of an account which has administrative rights over the computer to be moved. Select the computer in the Resource Updating Manager, right-click and select Set credentials.
NOTE: If the Resource Updating Manager is running on a Windows 2003 SP1 or higher (W2K3 R2), then the option mentioned in number 2, does not provide the required permissions. Only one solution is possible in such cases, which is to set the Resource Updating Manager Service account to have administrative rights over the computers to be moved. For example, using a source Domain Admins account and adding that account to the target domain Built-in Administrators group.
