During the migration of a site collection or a large site, you start seeing several instances of the error message below in the log:
System.InvalidOperationException: Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to obtaining a connection from the pool. This may have occurred because all pooled connections were in use and max pool size was reached.
The error may be due to the use of (Remote Blob Store) RBS on the target content database. It is caused by creating a new database for each site collection being migrated, and enabling RBS on it. When Content Matrix is adding items through SharePoint during migration, RBS is offloading. This causes the connection pool of the database to exceed 100 connections, and then time out.
Create the database with RBS disabled, migrate, and then re-enable RBS.
Below is a SQL query to monitor the connection pools:
