There is a known issue with distributed installations whereby a Server has a Task Processor Service installed, but no Scheduler Service installed.
If you attempt to run Tracking Log Gathering or Default tasks on a computer that contains a MessageStats Task Processor Service but not a MessageStats Scheduler Service, the Tracking Log task instances will fail if the installation directories for both the Scheduler Service Server and the Task Processor Service Server are not the same.
Further to this, if the installation directories for both Servers are not the same, application logging is suppressed. Refer to Quest Solution 15572 - "Unable to see View logs from a different Task Processor Server. The option is grayed out.":
