Using a DataDomain - does LiteSpeed support DD-Boost as a backup target or do we need to configure a CIFS folder or other filesystem as a target device?

We use LiteSpeed to backup our databases to a CIFS share on an EMC Data Domain device. Data Domain does the deduplication and encryption. LiteSpeed provides object level recovery. EMC provide "DD Boost for SQL Server" to enable some of the deduplication to happen on the database server. Will Quest provide integration to DD Boost in LiteSpeed?

We are implementing a DataDomain and need to know how to configure LiteSpeed to support this target location. Does LiteSpeed support DD-Boost as a backup target or do we need to configure a CIFS folder or other filesystem as a target device?

LiteSpeed does not support DD Boost. We have logged an enhancement request to have this functionality implemented and it is being tracked as LS-1029: "Litespeed support DD Boost for Datadomain"

WORKAROUND

LiteSpeed does not support DD Boost.

You could configure a CIFS shared folder as a target device.

While there is some deduplication to be had between full backups of the same database, using Fast Compression tends to eliminate most of the duplicate data from backups.

All of the developers tests show much better backup and restore speeds using Fast Compression with our data compression, as well as reduced storage when compared to uncompressed backups. Either way it's important to use Fast Compression for best performance.

This enhancement request is being evaluated by Product Management and Development for possible inclusion in a future release of LiteSpeed.
