Make sure that the VMTools are installed and that there are VSS drivers within the VMware image as well.
In order to check if the VSS drivers are enabled in the VM, you will need to logon to the VMware image and execute the following command:
vssadmin list writers
If the VSS drivers are enabled, you should be presented with a list and show the VSS drivers state - which should be showing as stable.
Also make sure that the UAC (User Access Control) is turned off, as this will prevent the VSS from accessing open files for the backup.
