Foglight Experience Monitor (FxM) Swap Partition Usage has reached 100% which in turn is causing "ERROR: Memory consumption has exceeded threshold" messages in the ecrit log and agent restarts.
We would like to increase the swap space to give it more room to work with so that it does not reach 100%. How do we do this? We seem to have have the required permissions.
Short Answer: you should not be increasing the swap space. You should be reducing load on the appliance.
More details--When the system starts swapping that means the sniffer and the memory it has allocated gets swapped out to the hard disk. Ordinarily the sniffer runs 100% in physical RAM.
The hard disk is dramatically slower in terms of I/O speed than physical RAM. _Any_ use of the swap space will immediately degrade FxM performance substantially.
We have a process that watches swap consumption. If it hits anything over 0% FXM will start shutting down processes to clear up physical memory so the sniffer has room to run.
In short, the system is designed to _avoid_ using swap space at all costs. Increasing the size of the swap space would really make no difference and it’s not something we’ve ever tested or would support. The performance requirements of a network sniffer don’t allow us that option.
