Can Foglight Experience Monitor (FxM) alert on server or application availability?
Use FTR (Foglight Transaction Recorder). This runs a synthetic transaction (recorded script) against a web application on a user-defined periodic schedule and reports the response time and availability.
Use 'Application Monitor', this is a very simple Foglight agent that just checks if the agent can load a web page and reports the status.
FxM is not designed to communicate with the networks it is monitoring.
FxM by it's very nature cannot alert on application/server availability.
FxM passively monitors traffic on the networks it is monitoring. It does not "ping" applications or servers so it is totally dependant on traffic being sent to the sites being monitored and reports on this traffic.
So if you have an application or server that does not get traffic 24/7 there is no way for FxM to know if the application is down or if it's just not getting any hits at that time.
If there was an application that is up and getting hits 24/7 then you can configure an alarm to would fire if there were no hits within X period of time. However, this would not tell you that the application is down; it would only tell you that there were no hits to the applications (i.e. no traffic on those web pages).
