Backup with vRanger may fail quickly the error above. VM is powered on and appears to be normally accessible & fully operational. From within vSphere, creating a snapshot on the virtual machine fails with this error: File is larger than maximum file size supported
This is due to the fact the starting with ESX(i) 4.0.0, VMware's snapshot open logic looks at the potential maximum size of the each disk's snapshot file in relation to its block size. If there is insufficient freespace or the block size of the datastore cannot accommodate the snapshot, VMware will not allow a snapshot to be taken.
There are several possibilities such as:
- free up space on the datastore
- storage vMotion vm to another datastore
- change the location where snapshot are stored for this vm
