Actve Block Mapping (ABM) is a patent-pending feature from Vizioncore (Now Quest Software), developed to optimize image-based data protection by keeping inactive blocks out of managed images. Vizioncore (Now Quest Software) introduced ABM in vReplicator 3. ABM is implemented in to vRanger Pro to offer critical performance advantages in all types of backup. It is also now available in NetVault's VMware Plug-in.
ABM is implemented as a query to the guest operating system, which returns a list of active blocks in the image. ABM can be used by itself to read only active blocks from a VM during a backup process. ABM can also be combined with Changed Block Tracking (CBT) to read only active and changed blocks when making incremental and differential backups.
