Description:
When adding a Powervault 132T library that has had it’s hardware configuration set to not use barcodes the library goes into a permanent checking loop,
Symptoms:
When adding a Powervault 132T library that has had it’s hardware configuration set to not use barcodes the library goes into a permanent checking loop, which can be seen in device manager.
This only happens when tapes are loaded into the slots otherwise the library comes on line fine.
The drives come on line with green led’s show against then in device manager.
From trace we see this in any slot containing a tape:
1 CHGSCSI :3412 22 0 103037 CMD READ ELEMENT STATUS [ b8 12 10 00 00 17 00 00 04 bc 00 00 ]
1 CHGSCSI :3412 65 0 103039 lCount 23 lElementLength 52 ValidTags TRUE ElementType 2
1 CHGSCSI :3412 4 0 103039 Storage Slot 1 physical 4096, ASC 8300 status d
The Read Element status reply indicates an ASC 8300 on slot 1; this indicates a questionable read of the barcode on this slot, depending on which ADIC SCSI spec you look at this may or may not mean "barcode label too long or too short “ which is not the response netvault is looking for. The expected responses are
With Barcode - ASC 00 Status 09
With Extended Barcode - ASC 00 Status 09
Without Barcode - ASC 8309 Status D
As we never received one of these the library goes and checks itself again and so the loop begins.
