Error when backing up Windows 2008 Server Core Domain Controllers: "cannot create 'directory' on 'server'. Access is denied"
When the share is created on the Windows 2008 Server Core DC the following syntax must be used in the command box:
NET Share sharename=e:\dir /GRANT:Everyone,Full (or similar depending on what access you need to give)
If the share is created with no /GRANT you should be able to see the directory but not write to it.
Once done and the Recovery Manager for AD backup is setup correctly, then when the backup is started the .tmp file is created in the chosen share\directory. However this .tmp file does not increase in size the same way as a normal DC backup file does. It remains on 0 bytes until the whole backup has completed. It is possible check this though on the Server core DC by changing to the backup directory in the command prompt typing DIR. The file size does not increase but the free disk space decreases as the file is written.
