Toad Workbook Workflows Disappear When Local Storage Objects Are Unavailable or Multiple Workbook Instances Access the Same Local Storage (4384229)

A user opens a Toad Workbook and discovers that some or all workflows are missing from the left navigation panel.

The workbook previously functioned correctly but later displayed a blank or partially populated workflow panel.

The issue is commonly associated with workbooks that rely on data stored in Toad Data Point Local Storage. Exception traces may contain errors similar to:

The workbook configuration references objects created in Toad Data Point Local Storage. If those objects become unavailable, Toad cannot resolve the workflow dependencies and the workflow panel may not render correctly.

Potential causes include:

1. Workbook opened on a different computer
   • Local Storage content is stored separately from the workbook file.
   • Moving the workbook without moving the associated Local Storage data causes references to become invalid.

   • If Local Storage becomes corrupted, the referenced tables may no longer exist or be accessible. 

2. Multiple workbook instances accessing the same Local Storage objects

   • Opening multiple copies of Toad Workbook that access the same Local Storage objects can lead to locking conflicts and unexpected behavior.
   • During investigation, the customer confirmed that both the original workbook and a recreated workbook were open simultaneously. Quest Support identified this as a likely contributor to the issue. 

3. Using Local Storage as a permanent data repository

   • Local Storage is intended for product features such as cross connections and other Toad processing requirements.
   • It is not designed to function as a primary database for storing business data. Heavy use can contribute to performance issues or corruption.

Do not open multiple copies of Toad Workbook that reference the same workbook or Local Storage objects.

Quest Support confirmed that opening two workbook instances that access the same Local Storage can result in locking conflicts and unexpected behavior. 

Transfer Local Storage When Moving Workbooks

If a workbook depends on Local Storage objects and is moved to another machine, the Local Storage data must also be transferred.

Recreate the Workbook if Corruption Occurred

If the workbook became corrupted while multiple instances were accessing the same Local Storage objects, the missing workflows may not be recoverable. In such cases, the workbook may need to be recreated from a known good copy or backup.
