How to Monitor Always On Availability Groups and Always On Failover Cluster in Spotlight -
Description
Customers report several problems when monitoring availability groups and failover clusters. -
Cause
The connections have not been added properly -
Resolution
NOTE: All the AG, SQL and Windows connections must be monitored by the same Diagnostic Server if part of a Federation, for the alarms and collections to work succesfully.
Availability group should be added as follows:- Create an Availability Groups connection type. Use the listener address
- Create a SQL Server connection type for each AG replica using the exact name as displayed on the AG overview. (if added correctly, they will show on the AG overview with a blue hyperlink, if added with a different name they will show in black without hyperlink)
- Each SQL Server connection to have an associated Windows connection type for each node. Under the “OS Details” section of the SQL Server Connection Properties window create the Windows connection by using the Create button, or choose the existing Windows connection name from drop down list.
- Create a Windows connection type for each node in the cluster.
- Create a SQL Server connection type for each AG replica. Use the Client Access Name* for the Address field. (*see screen shot at bottom)
- Each SQL Server connection to be associated with the Active node in the cluster. Under the “OS Details” section of the SQL Server Connection Properties window, select the ‘Cluster Active Node’ option from drop down list.
