Foglight 7.1 install or upgrade fails with InvocationTargetException error on Linux

In Linux, running the installation binary Foglight-7_1_1-install_linux-x86_64.bin crashes with this error message:

Stack Trace:
java.lang.NullPointerException: Cannot invoke "java.io.File.getPath()" because the return value of "Flexeraap6.ac()" is null

The install logs are created in the home directory for the current user (e.g. /home/foglight_svc/Quest/Foglight), but all log files are empty.
 

The current user has an OS-level issue creating files in it's home directory. The details of this underlying issue are outside of the scope of this KB.

The workaround for this issue can be to redirect the home directory for the installer.

# This example assumes the current user has permissions to write to /tmp/fms71
export _JAVA_OPTIONS="-Duser.home=/tmp/fms71"
# Then run the installer normally
./Foglight-7_1_1-install_linux-x86_64.bin -i console
