Can Quest migration products like DMW, QMM, EMW or QCS be installed and used on virtual machines?
Most of the migration products can run in virtual environments. Quest has a policy regarding virtualization outlined in the Global Support Guide which can be found on SupportLink.
Global Support Guide has a part called "Quest Support Policy for Virtual Environments & Storage Area Network (SAN) Devices", below is an excerpt:
"Quest Software recognizes the industry increase in general deployments of virtual environments and SAN devices by customers. We will use commercially reasonable efforts to investigate potential issues with Quest products running in conjunction with virtualization software or SAN devices even though the Quest product may not be currently certified to run in that environment. The following paragraphs describe how Quest Support will manage troubleshooting and diagnosing a problem.
In an effort to identify the root cause of the problem, Quest may require the customer to reproduce the issue independently of the virtualization software or SAN device. When issues are confirmed to be unrelated to the virtualization software or SAN device, Quest will support the software in a manner that is consistent with support provided when the software is not running in conjunction with virtualization software or SAN devices.
If Quest cannot reproduce the problem on a system not running virtualization software or SAN devices, then the customer will be required to contact the provider/vendor of the virtualization software or SAN devices for assistance in resolving the issue."
Many customers deploy the migration products in virtual environments when building their labs and testing. Whether to use the product on Virtual Machines in production or not - this will be solely your decision. Most of the migration products require lots of resources so installing on a non-virtual machine with newest hardware might be an excellent idea.
