Cannot connect to SQL Server instance '' : Timeout expired.
Description

Getting the following message during connection
Severity Alarm Message Raised Cleared High (requires acknowledgement) Monitored Server - SQL Server Connection Failure Cannot connect to SQL Server instance '<instance_name>' : Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding. : The wait operation timed out [0xFFFFFFFE] (requires acknowledgement) 28/07/2014 8:04:58 AM 28/07/2014 11:38:50 AM
Cause

This looks like a SQL Server bug that is causing the extended events session which has been added in SoSSE 10.5 to hang.

Spotlight on SQL Server 10.5.1 will have an option to disable extended event usage.
Resolution

WORKAROUND 1:
Apply the SoSSE 10.5.1 patch and follow the steps below to disable the extended events:
1. Locate the file Agent\conf\product\44.xml in the Spotlight Diagnostic Server installation folder.
2. Edit the file with a text editor
3. Locate the line
<property dataType="BOOLEAN" description="useextendedevents" displayName="UseExtendedEvents" encryptStyle="NONE" hidden="true" name="useextendedevents">true</property>
4. Change true (useextendedevents) to false.
5. Save the file.
6. Restart the Spotlight Diagnostic Server.
Once the Cumulative Update or Service Pack/Patch of SQL Server has been applied then extended events usage can be re-enabled by following these steps again. In step four change false to true.
WORKAROUND 2:
In Spotlight 11 version, select Configure | Diagnostic Server option from top ribbon bar and select 'Configure the use of Extended Events' option to disable usage of extended events.

The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding. : The wait operation timed out [0xFFFFFFFE]"
