I am unable to open my model in erwin DM (4311390)

Description:

When opening a somewhat large model, it just hangs and does not open.  What can be done about that?

Solution:

One of the possible reasons for that could be that a model has excessive number of Relationships, and also one or more Entity / Table has 80+ Relationships.  In that case, try the following:

• Open the model in erwin DM (it may take a long time, the best practice is not to open multiple instances of erwin DM while the model is being opened as resources will be shared).  You may even leave it overnight for the process to finish.
• Once the model is opened in erwin DM, create a new ER Diagram and switch to the newly created ER Diagram which will make it the active Diagram.
• Save the model and close while in that newly created active Diagram .
• Re-Open back the model in erwin DM.  It should open rather quickly.

Once it opens in a reasonable time frame, divide the model into different Subject Areas and Diagrams as needed to make it easier to navigate to.  Also, it is quite impractical to have everything in one Diagram.  As long as you are working with the Diagrams with a reasonable number of Entities and Relationships (especially one Entity with lots of (80+) Relationships), it should work fine.  Please note that switching back to the original Diagram with all objects will still take time, so suggest to avoid that unless really needed.  

If the model gives errors during the process of opening and still does not open even after a long time, please contact support and plan to send them the model to diagnose it further.
