Does Recovery Manager for Exchange need to be installed on a 64 bit windows platform to work with Exchange 2007?
No. Recovery Manager for Exchange (RMEX) can be installed on a 32 bit windows platform to work with Exchange 2007 on a 64 bit windows platform.
To do so follow these steps:
1) Install RMEX on a 32 bit windows platform
2) To work with Exchange Server 2007 databases, Recovery Manager requires the following .dll files that are installed with Exchange Server 2007 32 bit version: Ese.dll, Exchmem.dll, and Jcb.dll.
Ese.dll, Exchmem.dll and Jcb.dll can be found in the Exchange 2007 32 bit installer package (after extraction)
The Exchange 2007 32-bit Management tools need to be installed only if the Exchange Emulation feature needs to be used.
These management tools (e2k732en.exe) can be downloaded from:
http://www.microsoft.com/Downloads/details.aspx?familyid=6BE38633-7248-4532-929B-76E9C677E802&displaylang=en
Note: Jcb.dll is not installed with the Exchange 2007 32-bit Management tools.
3) Open RMEX console. Right click Quest Recovery Manager for Exchange (in the left hand pane) and select Link to Exchange .dll files
4) Click next on the configuration window and select Exchange Server 2007
5) In the next step specify the location of dlls downloaded in step 2
6) If the above 5 steps are performed then RMEX will be able to work with databases of Exchange 2007 64 bit in-spite of being installed on a 32 bit platform
You can have the following configuration that doesnt conflict with the Microsoft recommendations:
- Exchange 2007 installed on a 64bit machine.
- RMEX installed on a 32bit machine.
- RMEX linked to the 32bit Exchange 2007 .dll files
Recovery Manager can also be installed on a 64 bit windows platform in which case the dlls from Exchange Server 2007 (64 bit) would need to be registered.
