Working Copy GPOs in GPOADmin – Explanation and Behavior (4299735)

Working Copy GPOs are temporary copies of production (live) Group Policy Objects (GPOs) created by GPOADmin during the change management process.

As the name suggests, these are working copies used to stage and validate changes before they are committed to the live environment.

How Working Copy GPOs Are Created

A Working Copy GPO is automatically created when:

• A GPO is checked out from a Version Control container in GPOADmin
• An administrator begins modifying a GPO under change control

At this point:

• GPOADmin creates a duplicate of the live GPO
• The duplicate (Working Copy) is used for all edits and testing
• The original (live) GPO remains unchanged and unaffected

What Happens During Check-In

When the GPO is checked back in:

1. Changes made in the Working Copy are applied to the live GPO
2. The Working Copy is automatically deleted
3. Version control updates are recorded

This ensures a controlled and auditable process for GPO modifications.

Why Working Copy GPOs May Remain

In some cases, Working Copy GPOs may not be removed automatically. Common reasons include:

• Interrupted or failed check-in/check-out operations
• Communication or permission issues during cleanup
• Unexpected system or service interruptions
• Manual or incomplete workflow termination

How to Identify Working Copy GPOs

Working Copy GPOs can be identified by:

• Unique identifiers associated with the check-out session
• Naming conventions used by GPOADmin
• Matching the Working Copy ID with currently checked-out GPOs in the console

Resolution / Cleanup

If Working Copy GPOs remain in the environment:

• Verify whether the GPO is still checked out
• Match the Working Copy ID to confirm ownership and status
• If no longer needed and not in use, they can be safely deleted manually

⚠️ Important: Only delete Working Copy GPOs after confirming they are not associated with an active or pending check-out to avoid data loss.
