Error: "Exception EOleSysError in module WMIProxy.exe at 00018AE5" when trying to connect to a Wi (4297206)

Error received when trying to connect to a Windows-based database with OS monitoring turned on:

"Exception EOleSysError in module WMIProxy.exe at 00017491. Error accessing the OLE registry."

Restricted permissions of the user. The error occurs because registering a COM server requires write access to the registry key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID and only administrators have this by default.

This is usually related to privileges restrictions for the user on either the Spotlight client or the database server. You should get this error if you are connected as non administrator user.

Client permission requirements
During installation, Spotlight requires write access to the following folders:
. The Spotlight installation folder (by default, Program Files\Quest Software\Spotlight)
. Program Files\Common Files\Quest Shared
. Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Quest Software\Spotlight
and to the following Windows registry keys and sub-keys:
. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Quest Software\Products
. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Quest Software\Spotlight
. HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT

In many cases, the Spotlight installer will run at elevated privileges in order to perform the required actions. These privileges can specifically be allowed or disallowed by system administrators by means of standard Microsoft Installer (MSI) policy settings.

When running Spotlight

During operation, Spotlight requires write access to the following file locations under the Documents and Settings folder:
. All Users\Application Data\Quest Software\Spotlight
. All Users\Application Data\Quest Software\Shared
. <current user>\Application Data\Quest Software\Spotlight

You should also verify that you can run the required Oracle client on the Spotlight machine.

When authenticating a Spotlight license

When you install a new Spotlight application or update license details on an existing application, Spotlight requires:
. Administrator access to the Windows registry.
. Write access to the Console\Licenses sub-folder of the Spotlight installation folder.

WORKAROUND:

A Administrator User will need to, open a command prompt at C:\Program Files\Quest Software\Spotlight\Plug-ins\DatasourceWMI-WQL and type WMIProxy /regserver. Then the Windows monitoring will work in non-Admin mode.

STATUS:

An enhancement request has been submitted to Development for consideration in future release of Spotlight on Oracle.
