This article describes steps required to configure public or private SNMP access on BlackBerry Enterprise Server for Spotlight on Messaging.
The following steps need to be followed on the BES server.
I - Installing the SNMP service and SNMP management tool
On the computer on which the BlackBerry Enterprise Server is installed, on the taskbar, click Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs | Add/Remove Windows Components | Management and Monitoring Tools | Details, Install the SNMP service and the SNMP management tool.
II - Setting up the SNMP service
Create a community name and assign permissions to the community name to view SNMP events. At a minimum, Research In Motion (RIM) requires that read-only permissions are assigned to the community name. This community name is case sensitive when specifying the community name in the connection manager in SOM.
1. Open Services snap-in, right-click the SNMP service. Click Properties.
2. On the Security tab, in the Accepted Community Names section, click Add.
3. In the Community rights drop-down list, click the desired permission.
4. In the Community name field, type public.
5. Select the desired hosts to accept SNMP packets from. Add the NETBIOS name of the SOM server or IP address.
6. Click OK.
When in Spotlight making a connection to the BES server:
1. Click the Blackberry Server connection in Connection Manager
2. Tools - Properties
3. Check the Non-Public SNMP Community Check box and type the name of the community configured in the steps above, please note that this is case sensitive and should be typed as it appears in SNMP service.
Errors similar to below occur when SNMP is not successfully configured.
"BlackBerryDataProvider failed to collect table: SnmpData: An error
occurred during an SNMP operation: An error occurred trying to retrieve
object id .1.3.6.1.4.1.3530.5.15.0. Please ensure that the SNMP service
is running on the server, and that you have permission to access it.
Unknown error (0x28)"
If the message persists you may need to delete the existing Blackberry connection in connection manager and recreate using the NETBIOS Name of the BES server.
The Blackberry connection maybe successful but the SRP details remain grayed out. Follow the above steps to configure SNMP correctly and allow Spotlight to gather this information from the target BES server.
