External or off-board storage options for Virtual (VM) KACE SDA

For optimal performance, the appliance requires approximately 20 percent free disk space.

While physical KACE SDA appliances support multiple off-board solutions, the only supported method for a virtual KACE SDA is by adding/mapping a second virtual disk, and migrating the data to it.

Using the virtual machine software to supply the disk abstracts the underlying physical hardware/software/network on which the virtual disk resides allowing the VM software to take care of data reads and writes with the virtual KACE SDA.

In this way, any NAS, SAN, or network connected storage device supported by the VM software can be used to provide storage to the virtual KACE SDA. However, keep in mind that performance may suffer from this configuration.

Connect your external storage device to your VM software/appliance and ensure it can be accessed. Create a new virtual disk for the SDA ensuring your VM software creates the disk on the external device.

Ensure the new the virtual disk has enough capacity to hold all the data currently on the virtual SDA keeping in mind future growth needs. KACE Support does not recommend using a virtual disk with less storage capacity than the Virtual KACE SDA or RSA onboard storage. For example, a 250GB of onboard data, then the virtual disk must have more than 250GB of available storage.

Plan for data migration to take several hours depending on the amount of data and the network speed between the VM host machine and the external storage device. The Virtual KACE SDA or RSA will be unavailable during migration.
