Can mailbox/public folder synchronization be stopped and resumed at a later date? What are the repercussions of doing this?
Depending on how long the synchronization agents are stopped, and your Exchange environment, this can cause problems. This is due to how the agents synchronize object deletions.
The Mail Source Agent and Public Folder Synchronization Agent depend on the deleted objects being present in Exchange in order to synchronize deletions. If either of these agents is stopped long enough for the deleted items to be purged from Exchange (based on the deleted items retention time), then the deletion will not be synchronized when the agent is started back up. Users will then see items in the target mailbox/public folder that had previously been deleted on the source.
Therefore, it is not recommended to stop the agents for an extended period of time.
