Currently, when a connection or cursor is dropped from being idle for an extended amount of time, Toad does not prompt me that the connection or cursor has been dropped and ask if I want to reconnect. This is something that Toad should do. Also, TOAD should always check and validate a connection or cursor is valid before it fetches any new data from server.
WORKAROUND 1:
If disconnection occurs, you should be able to select Session | Test Connections (Reconnect) to get your connection back.
WORKAROUND 2:
Turn on DBMS polling to constantly ping database server. Go to Toad's Editor | DBMS Output tab and click on the red circle icon to enable it.
STATUS:
Waiting for enhancements to be included in a future released of Toad for Oracle.
