The license used in Secure Copy requires communication with the online licensing server to register the license key, and all source and target machines. If the Secure Copy console is installed on a computer with no Internet access, the console must be configured to run using “Offline Mode”. When the console is configured to run in “Offline Mode”, it is necessary to periodically export a product registration file from the Secure Copy console and upload it to a website from a computer with Internet access.
Please note that Secure Copy uses a phone home licensing system, and is licensed on a per copy source/target server basis. Installing, registering, and using the Secure Copy console does not consume any of your available server licenses, unless it is a source/target server. Because of this, it is highly recommended to install the Secure Copy console on a computer with access to the Internet, even if that computer is not the source or target server in the copy job. If this is not possible, please follow the steps below.
In this example version 6.0 is used, but it applies to versions 6.x and lower.
Step 1:
Have the current Secure Copy License key available. Open the Secure Copy console and select “Licensed Mode”, then “Next”.
Step 2:
Proceed through the product registration wizard to the “Please select the servers that you would like to license” pane. Here the source and target servers can be manually entered, but to avoid typos it’s recommended to “Select Server…” and browse Active Directory for the machine names. All source and target servers that will be involved in copy jobs should be added now, then select “Next”.
Note: If the servers are not added at this time, only the license key will register the application. Then, when attempting to run a copy job for machines that have not been registered, the Offline Registration process will need to be run again, so it’s best to add all servers now if possible.
Step 3:
Copy/Paste the Secure Copy license key and select “Next”:
Select FULL or LIMITED Licensing Management type. FULL is the recommended method, then click “Next”:
Select “Offline”, then “Next”.
Step 4:
Select “Export registration file" and browse to a location to store the file (the default location is the user temp directory), then click “Next” which will create a …RegFile.phl file.
Transport the exported file to a machine which has internet access. Go to the Quest Software – Offline Registration Browse to the saved …RegFile.phl file and select “Upload Registration”.
Step 5:
Once the upload has completed select “Download License File”. The downloaded license import file is named "LicenseFile.phl". Transport this file back to the Secure Copy machine.
Click “Next”. Browse to the location of the “LicenseFile.phl” file and select “Next”:
The Offline Registration is now complete. Click “Finish” and view the Secure Copy End User License Agreement (EULA). Then click “OK”.
To view the license servers at any time go to Help | License | License Status.
Additional Information
Note that this procedure must be performed under the following situations:
Initially when the license key is received. This is done to register the product and servers.
Any time a copy job is run and a new licensed server has been added to the job. This is done to register the new server name to the list of licensed servers available for the license. Once the server name has been registered for the license, it will not need to phone home again for any subsequent copy jobs that refer to that server.
Offline Registration Recommendation:
As indicated in this article, Secure Copy must perform an offline registration every time a copy job is run and a new server is added to the license. Secure Copy maintains a local cache of each server name that has been registered with the license. Each time a copy job is run, Secure Copy will match the source and target server names to the local cache and if either the source or target server has not yet been registered for that license, it will require an offline registration (uploading the PHL file to our website as outlined above).
Once the source and target server for a given job has been licensed, a copy job can be run on those servers without re-registering them. If all machines are not licensed when the license key is initially applied, it is recommended that the following steps are taken prior to performing a migration:
Determine the names of every additional source/target server.
Create a new copy job(s) and add every remaining server name as the source/target servers.
Configure the job so that a single file or folder is copied to/from the new source/target server(s).
Run this copy job(s). The Offline Registration process will need to be followed again to register the new server(s).
