Checking existing MAPI version.
Right-click on the following file and click on the Version tab to see the File Version: C:\WINDOWS\system32\mapi32.dll
If the latest version of MAPI is installed then this file Version should be "1.0.xxx" as this indicates that the MAPI stub is present (see Additional Information section for explanation of MAPI stub), redirecting MAPI calls to C:\Program Files\ExchangeMapi\EXMAPI32.DLL.
If the version number of C:\WINDOWS\system32\mapi32.dll starts with a 6.x, this is outdated and can cause problems with archiving.
Important: Both the ESM and Dataloader services should be stopped when carrying out any changes to the MAPI subsystem.
Note: This package will often report sucessful installation when it has not actually updated the version of C:\WINDOWS\system32\mapi32.dll. Be sure to verify that the version number has been changed to 1.0.x otherwise it will be necessary to uninstall the MAPI CDO package, rename C:\WINDOWS\system32\mapi32.dll to mapi32_old.dll and reinstall the MAPI CDO. It may also be necessary to run FixMapi.exe prior to reinstalling MAPI. A server reboot may also be required in order to correctly install MAPI.
Removing Exchange System Manager
Before updating the version of MAPI, please ensure that any programs that use MAPI have been uninstalled. This includes any version of Outlook or Exchange System Manager. Uninstalling Exchange System Manager can be problematic as it often requires the original CD when the Add/Remove programs option fails. When uninstalling, select "Change" on the Microsoft Exchange Component and "Remove" on the "Microsoft Exchange System Management Tools" component.
