For instance in the case where an Exchange server has been damaged or has been decommissioned.

Resolution
This is now feasible with Recovery Manager for Exchange 5.0. Exchange Server databases can now be extracted from backup and registered with Recovery Manager even if the original source Exchange Server is down, no longer exists, or cannot be accessed from the Recovery Manager computer.
