When attempting to register a GPO, you receive the error "A version number could not be parsed."
Description

A GPO errors on registering with "A version number could not be parsed".
This same GPO cannot be backed up through GPMC either.
Cause

Unexpected data found within gpt.ini file.
Resolution

1. Locate the GPO in GPMC, go to "Details" tab and note the Unique ID.
2. Locate the folder in SYSVOL with the name that matches the GUID from step 1.
3. Edit the existing gpt.ini file.
If there is a line with "displayName=New Group Policy Object", delete the entire line.
The final gpt.ini should look like:
[General]
Version=<numeric version number>
