How to Extract The Files Used To Deploy A Service Pack (4231392)

When deploying a service pack, the service pack file must first be extracted to a share on the network where domain users have read and execute privileges.

The service pack executable file downloaded from Microsoft is an archive that must be extracted at a command line utilizing the "-x" switch. This action will extract the service pack into multiple folders where Update.exe or SPInstall.exe file will be found.

Note:Using the "-x" switch will extract the archive without installing the service pack to the machine that it is run on.

1. Open a Command Prompt window on the computer where the service pack file download resides.

2. Change directories to the location where the service pack file resides.

3. Type in the name of the service pack executable, followed by the extract switch, and press ENTER. Example:W2KSP4.exe -x

4. When prompted to specify the target location for the extracted files, choose a share on your network where domain users have read and execute privilege. Example: \\server\netlogon.

5. On the Service Pack Deployment object, browse to this network location and locate the update.exe or spinstall.exe file located in C:\i386\update\update.exe.
